If old shirts are nice and comfortable and nice to wear, old friends are too... not the nice to wear part but comfortable to be with. Old friends from childhood - they're kinda special cos you share a past building dreams and hopes.
If not for friends life would be so boring, right? Life is about relationships and this is one of them. Met up with an old-old friend in trip back to my kampung this time. I wasn't expecting to see her till next week. So, it was a pleasant surprise!
I went over to her parents' place. The adults still get along famously. The nice thing is to see the next gen getting along equally famously too... LOL! Anyway, I was super duper impressed to hear her boys rattling of the elements in the Periodic Table... these kids are home schooled. So they don't go through the rigours of stress that our kids go through. According to their ma, they have ample time to draw and redraw, and redraw the Periodic Table and learn them in the 'funnest' way.
Here, my gal who is in a cluster school seems to be plastered by her multitude of homework. Learning takes on a kind of structure that inhibits rather than liberates the mind. Learning should be fun in the early years so that kids treat knowledge as something that is caught by their own imaginations. We are force feeding our kids and turning them into bulimics. Not much harm but no fun either.
Anyway, back to old friends; they are like old wine... they grow better with age. More later...

one observation i would like to share is that this 'old friends from childhood days' thing does not apply to many of my 'newer' friends/colleagues. many of these 'newer' friends/colleagues do not seem to share the same 'old friends from childhood days' thing that us sitiawan folks do...
yup.. that is very true. We have something very special going on. And I'd like to think that being together especially in the MYF made the difference... of kindred spirits and a feeling of brother(sister)hood. That, old friend... is definitely a blessing, don't you think?
