On the Digital Leash...

I guess this must be a common sight for everyone. You go out and have a meal and your teenager whips his mobile out and proceeds to thumb smses throughout the dinner? It kinda gets on one's nerves, cos he'll seem neither there nor here. It's distracting cos when you talk to him you get this spacey feeling. And no matter what you say...he's leashed to that little tool.

Welcome into the world of digital leashes. Dog leash and digital leash have a lot in common. There are many types of leashes - the long leather one, retractable type, bungee leash (yup! they've one of those), hands free leashes, Martingale leads (it's an all in one leash - collar cum leash... the list is not exhaustive and each controls the dog in different ways. I'm tickled by what I've read about the different types of leash.

  1. The long leather/cord type give enough length for your dog to roam a little but allows you to maintain a great deal of control.
  2. The retractable leash allows your dog can roam further but may expose him to danger as you will be hard pressed to coil him back in quickly, as it takes time to retract the cord in order to pull back your dog.
  3. Bungee leashes on the other hand maintains tension through the length of the leash so that there is less pulling on you as you walk. It is also less likely that your dog will trip on its paws.
  4. A martingale collar fits snugly to the exact size of the dog's neck and will be comfortably loose when not in use.
See the similarity to the digital leash? The mobile has leashed us to a certain routine, lifestyle, people etc.. like the dog, we turn where we are directed. By who? Friends, parents, bosses and colleagues...again this list is endless. Bosses leash their workers so that they can be at their beck and call. GF/BF leash their partners so that they can monitor their every move.

Parents leash their children so that they know their whereabouts. Children leash their parents so that they can call at the slightest bit of SOS! Here, interestingly, the digital leash has created a generation of young who are overly dependent on their parents. We're getting a generation of young who depends on their parents for a lot more things than my generation. All made possible because of the easy access of this digital leash.

Not too long ago, if you ran into problems, one's first urge would be to turn to the parents also. But because of the distance and also the difficulty in contacting them, we sometimes had to wait. That waiting period forced us to try solve the problem...hence we learned to cope and handle. It doesn't quite work this way these days. First sign of problem...SOS signal would be sent out and the over-protective parents would rush to their aid.

The digital leash is here to stay. You and I...we are on the digital leash! Question is...to what extent does it control you? Woof! Woof! Anyone??? 8)

I've seen dogs taking / dragging their owners for a walk (jog?). My neighbour's golden retriever would bring his leash to his owner when he wants to go out. So who is on the leash? Anyway it is a dangerous world outside the four walls of the home so being leashed to each other isn't all terrible. Display of the caller's name also gives a certain leeway as to respond immediately, delayed or not at all.
